Interdimensional Semiotics
A field-in-construction at the venn-overlap of computer science and the humanities. The study of how meaning persists, transforms, and dissolves across substrates — between paradigms, between cosmologies, between languages, between biological and artificial cognition, between collective honoring and material reality.
What This Is
Interdimensional Semiotics (IntSem) is a research field developed by Nathan Eckenrode and pursued under the umbrella of Eckenrode Muziekopname as one of its branches of intellectual study. It studies the dynamics of meaning across substrate-transitions using two foundational principles:
- The Tinkerbell Rule: as long as everybody believes in it, magic exists. Objects whose mode of existence is collective honoring — paradigms, currencies, identities, institutions, scientific consensus — exist in a specific mode whose condition of possibility is the continued honoring. Subtract the honoring; the object dissolves into substrate.
- Reality is What is Left: the substrate that remains when the honoring is subtracted. Gravity does not care what you believe. The clock ticks. The stone falls. The substrate is what continues to operate when the Tinkerbell layer is removed.
The field studies the dynamics by which Tinkerbell encounters reality, absorbs reality, fails to absorb reality, or is broken by reality — across paradigms (Kuhn), across epistemes (Foucault), across cognitive substrates (Kurzweil), across simulacrum-orders (Baudrillard), and across all the contemporary substrate-questions raised by AI, networked computation, and the dissolution of older epistemic frames.
Status
Active development. The field has been under sustained development since its naming in April 2025. Current corpus includes:
- Three substantive essays in
Essays/developing the methodology against primary texts - One curriculum document (
Curricula/IDS 101 - Syllabus.md) — the field's first pedagogical instantiation - ~150 concept notes in
Reading Materials/Concepts/providing the conceptual vocabulary - A theoretical cornerstone document (
Theory/) preserving the field's original CIF / fractal-geometry / semiotic-attractor formulation - The full reading list in
Interdimensional Semiotics Reading List.mdwith cross-book conceptual development - Source documents (Glossary, Field Summary, Tree of Satisfaction, Tree of Success, Rules for being a Ghost, Rules for being Human, Chapters, etc.)
- The Academic Outline (April 2025) preserved as the field's earliest single-page articulation
- The HEMM Space document treating the topological superstructure that contains all causal spheres, with historical-background section preserving the pre-promotion intra-cosmic coordinate framing
Where This Lives
This GitHub repository is a syndication endpoint for IntSem material whose canonical home is the Eckenrode Muziekopname website. The publication architecture follows POSSE — Publish (on your) Own Site, Syndicate Elsewhere:
- Canonical own-site: eckenrodemuziekopname.com (research division)
- Syndication endpoints: This GitHub repository, future fediverse / Mastodon / RSS endpoints as they come online
- Substrate (private, canonical): Author's vault, not publicly accessible
If you find inconsistencies between this repository and the eckenrodemuziekopname.com presentation, the website is canonical. This repository updates downstream from the canonical home.
How to Read This
The field has multiple entry points, and which one to start with depends on what you bring:
- If you come from philosophy / theory of science: start with the Revolting Tinkerbell essay. It reads Kuhn's Structure of Scientific Revolutions through the IntSem two principles and develops the methodology in a register closest to academic philosophy of science.
- If you come from cognitive science or AI: start with The Outboard Cortex. It reads Kurzweil's pattern-recognition theory of mind through the two principles and applies the field to the contemporary question of cognitive-substrate-extension via AI.
- If you come from critical theory / French theory / cultural studies: start with the Foucault and Baudrillard essay. It reads both thinkers through the two principles and develops the methodological argument for substrate-honest intellectual genealogy. The title is the methodological commitment, not transgression for its own sake; the essay's body argues why.
- If you want the pedagogy: see the IDS 101 syllabus for how the field would be taught at a liberal arts university.
- If you want the cosmological / mathematical foundations: see Theory/Interdimensional Semiotics (Theoretical Cornerstone) and the HEMM Space document.
- If you want the field's reading list: see Interdimensional Semiotics Reading List.
What This Is Not
- Not a finished system. The field is in construction, with conscious wiggle-room maintained at the structural level. The two principles are stable; the application territory is still being mapped.
- Not affiliated with any university. The field is pursued under the umbrella of Eckenrode Muziekopname as an independent research practice. Inheritance of the apparatus is welcome; institutional capture is not the goal.
- Not a closed corpus. The reading list, the concept notes, and the essays are all living documents that will continue to develop.
Methodological Note
The current vault — and therefore this repository — was developed substantially with AI assistance, primarily Claude (Anthropic). This is disclosed structurally rather than as an afterthought. The field's third essay, Assfucking my Ex-Wife, Baudrillard and the Deviancy of Foucault, argues that substrate-honest disclosure of AI mediation is now a research-program-level commitment for the field. The essay's argument applies recursively to the field's own publication apparatus, including this repository.
The IDS 101 syllabus extends this commitment to pedagogy — the seminar discusses how essays were prepared alongside what they argue. Concealment of AI mediation is treated as the same kind of Tinkerbell-honoring as concealment of any other substrate condition.

Legacy
The April 2025 state of this repository — the field as it stood in the immediate week after its name was generated — is preserved on the legacy/2025-04-snapshot branch for historical reference.

"Interdimensional Semiotics is not about preserving knowledge in a dead state. It is about understanding how meaning itself can breathe, fracture, evolve, and survive in a multiversal ecology where reality, memory, and identity are in constant flux. And the true map is not where you are, but what you are carrying forward."
